Academy classes to hold fundraising benefit

The West Seneca Finance Academy and the Academy of Digital Media will hold a fundraising benefit and auction from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Denny’s Restaurant, 1881 Ridge Road. Twenty percent of all meals and 100 percent of the auction proceeds will help fund the students’ trip to the leadership conference in Orlando, Florida.

PAWS for summer pet expo set for May 30

VFW Post 8113 will host a “PAWS for Summer Pet Expo” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the post, 299 Leydecker Road. There will be 14 rescue organizations participating, chicken barbecue, frozen treats for canines, favorite summer foods, vendors and special animal topic presentations. Admission is free.

Chamber offers Krolick’s chicken BBQ

The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce will hold a chicken barbecue from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in Southgate Plaza, 950 Union Road. Krolick’s dinner includes a half-chicken, two sides and a roll. Dinners are $10, takeout only. Call the Chamber office at 674-4900 for more information.

Senior Center offers trip to Cape Cod

The West Seneca Senior Center is offering a trip to Cape Cod with a stop in Martha’s Vineyard from Monday, Sept. 14, to Friday, Sept. 18. It includes four nights’ lodging, four breakfasts and four dinners, a visit to Martha’s Vineyard, an exploration of Hyannis and Sandwich, a tour of the Outer Cape including Provincetown and Chatham, and visits to the JFK Museum and the Eastham Windmill. The cost is $498 per person. A $100 deposit is required for reservation. Register by Friday, May 29. The trip is open to seniors, friends and families. Burchfield to celebrate spring with tea party

Friends of the Burchfield Nature & Art Center will host a tea party from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Burchfield Nature & Art Center, 2001 Union Road, West Seneca. Guests will be treated to a variety of breads, sandwiches and desserts along with a selection of teas. In addition, LuAnn Gerace from Purrfect Tea & Gift Emporium will give a presentation on the history and tradition of high tea. The cost of the event will be $20 per person. Reservations may be made by calling 677-4843 or in person at the center. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Kite-flying for homeless veterans slated for May

A free, annual kite-flying event to benefit homeless veterans — “Come Fly A Kite” — is slated to take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Gratwick Waterfront Park in North Tonawanda. Children of all ages can receive a free kite to fly. The Great Lakes Kite Flyers Society with its large kites will be present. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. Voluntary donations will be accepted. Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs. Proceeds will be donated to WNY Veterans Housing Coalition, Vets Herd Inc. and the VA Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program. For information, call 515-5844.

Shrine sets spring brunch extravaganza

The Shriners will present the group’s first Spring Brunch Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 31. Among the items to choose from will be baked ham, roast beef, Polish sausage, bacon, eggs, sausage links, quiche Lorraine, French toast, scalloped potatoes, home fries, salads and homemade desserts. Coffee, tea and juice are included. The brunch will take place at the Shrine Center, 1600 Southwestern Blvd. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. Food drive benefits West Seneca Food Pantry

The Firemen’s Memorial Exhibit Center is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the West Seneca Food Pantry through the end of May. Donations may be dropped off from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at the center, located at 4141 Seneca St. Items most needed include boxed dinners, pasta, peanut butter and paper products. Chamber sets martini mixer networking event

The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce will hold a martini networking party at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the Buffalo Sports Garden, 2945 Southwestern Blvd. in Orchard Park. BNAC to hold haiku poetry and art classes

Learn about and be inspired by haiku poetry at the Burchfield Nature & Art Center this spring. “Haiku of the Flowers,” a one-hour poetry class, will be offered at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at the center, 2001 Union Road. The class will be followed by a one-hour painting session to provide watercolor background for the poetry. Registration is required by Monday, June 1. Each class costs $5. Materials will be provided for the painting session. No previous writing or art experience is necessary. Call the center at 677-4843 for more information or to register.

Brainstormers to present ‘Power Up’ at Library

Brainstormers will present “Power Up: Retired Superheroes regain power by volunteering” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 4, at the West Seneca Public Library, 1300 Union Road. The program will show relevant, thoughtful and entertaining short plays that dramatize issues of concern to seniors and others, with follow-up discussions. Historical Society offers trip to WWII museum

The West Seneca Historical Society will visit the World War ll Museum in Eldred, Pennsylvania, on June 10. The former munitions plant houses numerous displays and artifacts. Buses will leave at 9 a.m. from the West Seneca Museum, 919 Mill Road; stop for lunch at Sprague’s Restaurant in Portville, New York; and return at about 4 p.m. The cost is $32, which includes transportation and museum fee. Chamber to hold ‘Ticket to Success’ event,

The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce will hold a free marketing seminar, “Ticket to Success,” at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at Flix Stadium 10, 4901 Transit Road, Depew. The event will feature Frank Swiatek, national marketing speaker.
