Pie, pumpkin contests to be held at Burchfield

Friends of the Burchfield are sponsoring a pie-baking contest on Saturday, Oct. 1, in addition to a pumpkin-carving contest with prizes to be determined on the basis of creativity and character, judged by children and adults. Pumpkins will be raffled at the Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Burchfield Nature & Art Center, 2001 Union Road. All entries must be preregistered by Friday, Sept. 16. Author, athlete hold book signing at Bases Loaded

Former Buffalo Bills’ player Mark Kelso and author Joe Kirchmyer of West Seneca will host a book-signing event from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Dog Ears Bookstore, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo. Kelso wrote the foreword for Kirchmyer’s novel, “Diamonds in the Rough,” which is a collection of sports stories ranging from local sports leagues to human survival. Southtowns Radiology offers free mammograms

Free mammograms will be provided to both underinsured and uninsured women throughout Western New York beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Southtowns Radiology, 3050 Orchard Park Road, West Seneca. This event is in collaboration with Cancer Services Program of WNY. To schedule an appointment, call 886-9201. Appointments must be made by Sept. 16. WS Woman’s Club sets monthly meetings

The West Seneca Woman’s Club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at Ebenezer Church of Christ, 630 Main St., West Seneca. The group usually has a guest speaker or a special program planned. Women in the Southtowns who are 18 and older are encouraged to join the group for socialization and support of the community. Chiavetta’s chicken BBQ planned at Southgate

A Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue has been planned for noon on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Southgate Plaza on Union Road. This event is sponsored jointly by the Firemen’s Memorial Exhibit Center and West Seneca Historical Society. Dinners cost $9 each or $8 for presale tickets, which are available at the Firemen’s center, 4141 Seneca St., West Seneca.

Senior lunching group slates monthly meeting

Eden Heights of WS plans charity fundraiser

Eden Heights of West Seneca, located at 3030 Clinton St., will host a Chinese auction from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. The event will feature refreshments, live Polka music by Ken Nagel, and such vendor tables as Jewelry by Jeanette and Fabric Art by Lynn. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York.

Blessed John XXIII schedules flea market

Blessed John XXIII Church will host a flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. The church is located at 1 Arcade St., on the corner of Harlem Road and across from Winchester Fire Hall. Shriner’s of WNY organize chicken BBQ

The Shriner’s of WNY will host a chicken barbecue from noon to 5 p.m. (or until sold out) on Sunday, Sept. 18. Cost is $8 per person and includes a two-pound half chicken, corn, salad and roll. Grief support group slates Monday meetings

Registration planned for Tiger, Cub scouts

Cub Scout Pack 618 will hold registration for new Tiger Scouts and Cub Scouts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the South Line Fire Hall, 1049 French Road, Cheektowaga. Tiger Scouts are for boys entering first grade, and Cub Scouts are for boys entering second grade. The pack also needs parents to volunteer to be leaders. First Presbyterian to host ‘Posi Palooza’ this fall

First Presbyterian Church of West Seneca will host “Posi Palooza” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. The church is located at 2085 Union Road. The concert features a group of four Christian artists from various areas of the nation — they are Jana Stanfield, Daniel Nahmod, Richard Mekdeci and Sue Riley. St. Teresa’s Church plans electronics raffle

St. Teresa’s Church will host an appliance and electronics raffle on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the parish center, located at 33 Mineral Springs Road. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the raffle will begin at 7 p.m. A total of 22 prizes worth $10,000 will be raffled. Side raffles will also be available. Vigilant Fire Company plans fall meat raffle

Vigilant Fire Company will host its fall meat raffle on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the fire hall, 666 Main St., West Seneca. Doors open at 5 p.m. and first spin is at 6 p.m. Admission costs $2 and includes beer, sandwiches and pop. Meats will be supplied by Camillo’s Sloan Market. Mixed media art exhibit on display at ETJ

Seneca Hose to host benefit for cancer patient

A benefit for Bob Rodler, who is battling terminal cancer, will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Seneca Hose Fire Hall, 2829 Seneca St. Tickets cost $25 and includes a pasta dinner, beer, pop, and live music by Ron LoCurto and the Reinhardts, with Carl Russo from 97 Rock as emcee. Artists sought for Fall Art Show at Burchfield

The West Seneca Art Society invites painters, sculptors and photographers to be a part of its Fall Art Show at the Burchfield Nature & Art Center, 2001 Union Road. Show dates are Sunday, Oct. 9, through Wednesday, Nov. 2. An opening reception will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. PSAT registration underway

Registration for this year’s Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test is available now through Thursday, Oct. 6. Cost is a $15 cash-only fee. Students should register with the Student Services Center: call West Seneca East Senior at 677-3309, or West Seneca West Senior at 677-3361. All juniors and any sophomores in accelerated English classes are encouraged to take this exam. The PSAT has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 12.
